Sports Update
by Emma Yee Yick
Second semester sports are in full fling at CM. As per last semester, Volleyball, Cross Country, Soccer, and Basketball are running simultaneously. Our student athletes, despite their already busy schedules, have continued their commitment to the sports they love.
In Volleyball, both the boys and girls are preparing for the BiCultural tournament in February and Volleyball AASCA in March.
The Cross Country team continues to train every Tuesday and Friday morning. The team has also experienced an influx of runners, hoping to get in shape for the rest of the sports season as well as for their health.
Both the boys and girls soccer teams have already had their first games against Village. The girls playing with only 9 players, tied (0-0), which in itself is quite an accomplishment. While the boys suffered a loss, they are training harder than ever in hopes of bettering their odds this season.
Lastly, the girls basketball team is looking for new recruits. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays. No experience is required! The boys however, are going as strong as they were last semester and are hoping to participate in a tournament later this spring in El Salvador.
It’s not too late to join a team!

Costa Rica Bound
by Emma Yee Yick
The boys basketball team is gearing up to head to Costa Rica this week for the AASCA Basketball tournament 2014 which is hosted by the Marian Baker School. This team has only gotten better since beginning practice way back in August. Dealing with the loss of many key team members, all of whom were seniors and graduated last year, many wondered if this year’s team would be able to live up to the old team’s glory. Boy were we in for a shocker when this team, headed by Ikjoo Yoo, and composed by many lowerclassmen, rose to the occasion and made a name for themselves--not only amongst the Maya Community, but amongst the rest of the teams here in Guate. I asked many of the players what they believed was the key to their success so far this season, and the answers I received varied from how well they “work as a team,” to their “practicing hard,” and putting in “some long hours,” to their being the “most skilled team in the league.” And even a fact stated by newcomer Brandon Oliver that they have “the nicest shoes in the whole league.” I’d argue that it’s a mixture of all of the above. Going in with a “winning mentality” is what has driven the Warriors this season and what will drive them next week, hopefully to victory, in the land of “pura vida”.
